What is weaning?
Weaning is the gradual process of introducing solid foods to your baby’s diet alongside breast milk or formula milk. It’s a way to transition them from solely relying on milk to eating a wider variety of foods. This period also involves teaching your baby to eat from a spoon, swallow, and eventually chew.
Ready or Not?
As a rough guide, the weaning period typically starts around 6 months from birth. However, every child develops at their own pace, so don’t rush the process. Here are some signs your baby might be ready to begin weaning:
• Sit up & hold their head steady
• Seems interested in other foods or take it from your plate
• Pick things and put them in their mouth
• Swallow some food when you offer them
Things you should keep in mind
• Introduce one new food at a time during the early stages of weaning. This helps identify any potential allergies.
• Always give freshly prepared food
• Do not forcefully feed your child
• Start with a small quantity and gradually increase the portion
• Always feed the baby when he/she is sitting. Do not feed when the baby is lying on back
• Sterilize the bowls, spoons, vessels used to feed the baby in hot water
• No salt, sugar, or honey for the baby until 1 year
• Always feed breast milk or formula milk on demand of the baby
• Most importantly, talk to your pediatrician before starting solids
