Bowed Legs
Out of many other concerns, parents have this fear when a child starts to walk. In this article, we shall help you understand the reason, signs & treatment for Bowed Legs.
What is Bowed Legs?
The bowed leg is a situation when a child stands with his toes forward and ankles together but his knees don’t touch each other. The outward or the inward curve of the legs of a child cause this and this becomes noticeable when the child tries to stand or starts to walk.
Babies are born bow-legged due to their position in the womb. When the child starts walking between the age of 9 months and 1 and a half years, the bones in their legs will start to slowly reform as old bone breaks down to form one new bone required to support their weight. This correction generally happens by 6 or 9 months of them starting to walk.

Treatment for Bowed Legs or When to Visit a Doctor?
At any age you doubt about the same, it is best to have a word with the doctor. If with age there is no improvement there are many non-surgical methods to help the legs straighten. Before that doctor would take an x-ray to rule out Blout’s Disease and recommend a blood test to rule out vitamin D deficiency. In very rare scenarios a surgical method would be recommended.
One must keep in mind that this can also be caused due to the child being overweight, started walking early, family history, or regular use of baby walkers as it might strengthen the wrong muscles. So please do not fret during the initial days, with the baby’s growth and muscle strengthening this will go on its own. But ensure to have a word with the doctor.
