Diarrhea is when a baby passes very runny, liquidy stool and in more than normal frequency or volume.   It may be associated with vomiting sometimes. Breast fed babies may pass lose, yellow and seedy stools, whereas formula fed babies may pass tan brown poop. Babies with diarrhea become weak, fussy, cranky and also have trouble feeding.

Causes & Treatment for Diarrhea in Babies

Reasons for diarrhea in babies can be bacterial or viral infections, a side effect of any antibiotic, may be caused by parasites from contaminated toys, foods or hands, or may be due to milk allergy sometimes even with formula they take.

Treating babies with diarrhea at home is first advised.

1. Do not allow them to go dehydrated and continue to breastfeed or formula feed as regularly.

2. Do not offer any medication without being prescribed by a pediatrician

3. Do not offer any sugary drinks or juices

4. For babies above 6 months taking solids, offer starch rich foods like rice, oats, chicken etc.

5. Change soiled diapers immediately to avoid diaper rash or irritation in babies.

When to see a Doctor?

1. Meet or call doctor if baby’s diarrhea doesn’t improve even after 24 hours.

2. You see bloody or black stools.

3. Not passing urine frequently is a sign of dehydration and dry mouth too.

4. Unusually sleepy, cranky or sunken abdomen, eyes or cheeks.

5. Has fever and continues vomiting along with frequently passing motion
