Body Butter is a moisturizing skin care product made using skin care butter and oils. These are also called as Mommy Butter. I had no clue about what a Body Butter is until I conceived second time. This time I’m more conscious in using products and researching them prior. While researching on How to avoid stretch marks during Pregnancy I came across this amazing product which can be easily made at home. DIY Body Butter requires few expensive yet natural ingredients like Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter, which are not much famous yet in India but picking up.

Unlike lotions which are made using water and oil(generally), body butters are slightly greasy. The default reason being the use of greasy butter and oils. I’m currently(Jan 2019) at my 9th month of pregnancy and have been using it since my 3rd month of pregnancy. I’m happy with the results and its safeguarding my skin in this season of winter too. With this video I’m making a second batch which I can use post delivery too, as it’s important to use when your skin is getting back to normal.

To make this Body Butter I’ve used

  • Cocoa Butter – High in fatty acids, Cocoa butter has the ability to hydrate and nourish your skin and improve elasticity. 
  • Coconut Oil – Famously used for massaging all skin types, coconut oil contains saturated fatty acids which fortify skin cell and make it healthier. It also helps in preventing and healing stretch marks. 
  • Almond Oil – Vitamin E present in Almond Oil is very essential for skin treatment. It also prevents one’s skin from damages occurred due to UV radiation and makes it smooth, soft and free of stretch marks. 
  • Essential Oil – These concentrated and highly effective oils are generally the essence of a plant. With an amazing perfume these essential oils provide aromatherapy – a stress buster, and soothe your skin as well.

How to use this DIY Whipped Body Butter during Pregnancy or Postpartum?

Take a pea sized butter and rub it on, specially on your stomach. Rubbing it well and taking small amount of butter ensures that you don’t find it too greasy. Apply it twice or thrice a day, as at this time your skin tends to dry a lot.

DIY Body Butter is a moisturizing skin care product made using skin care butter and oils

Ingredients

  1. Shea Butter - 1/2 cup
  2. Cocoa Butter - 1/2 cup
  3. Coconut Oil - 1/2 cup
  4. Almond Oil - 1/2 cup
  5. Essential Oil - Lavendar - few drops

Method

  1. Lets create a double boiler to heat the butters. Take a bowl add little water and bring it to a boil. Place a bigger vessel or glass bowl on top of it hence creating a double boiler. This is essential as we need not cook butters but just need to melt them.
  2. I'm taking each 1/2 cup of Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter and Coconut Oil.
  3. Its time to melt them together. Ensure that the heat is kept low.
  4. Once all the butter and oil is melted it would look like this. As we don't need to melt Almond oil, at this stage we can add 1/2 of Almond oil too.
  5. After mixing all the oils together let's refrigerate the mixture for an hour or two until it looks like this. Ensure its not too hard. We can then start whipping it till it forms butter.
  6. Its now time to add few drops of essential oil. You can continue whipping till you see some peaks like below, just like you would whip cream for icing. Once done you can transfer it to a glass jar, preferably, and store it for further use.
  7. DIY Body Butter is ready for use.

Ingredients :

Note : 

  1. As we use very little amount of butter at a time, this would last you for atleast 4 months when applied for whole body.
  2. This way even if you find the ingredients expensive now, you can save a lot when you make it at home instead of buying it.
  3. Avoid it on your face if you have a oily skin, if not it makes for a great night moisturizer as well.
  4. Use it for babies and kids during winter to safeguard their skin from harsh weather effects.
  5. DIY Body Butter can be kept at room temperature unless you stay in a very hot climate. Refrigerate if in doubt and it would stay good for years.
  6. I’ve used Lavendar essential oil, you can use any essential oil of your choice here.
  7. Regular use on scars can help lighten it up.
