Fruits are necessary for babies and kids optimal growth as they are loaded with nutrition necessary for the season, when used the seasonal ones of course. Parents often have this question –
• Can I give my baby Juice?
• When can I start Fruit Juices for my baby?
• How much Juice can I offer daily?

Pediatricians stress on the fact that babies until a year need not be fed any sort of juices as it interferes in the breast milk or formula milk consumption which is the main source of nutrition. Also remember they do not need any other form of liquid at this age, and even water to be offered in limited quantities along with solid foods. However if you still intend to offer it, just few spoons in between meals can be offered occasionally.

Juices can be offered to babies after completion of one year, keeping below points in mind.

1. Feed only 100 – 120 ml of juice occasionally

2. Use local, seasonal and fresh fruits only

3. Do not add excess sugar

4. Use sippy cups and no bottles

5. Do not offer any sort of packaged drinks

Excess intake of juice is not recommended for toddlers, because

1. Can develop sweet tooth and avoid other food flavors

2. It will reduce their appetite for solid and more nutritious foods

3. Can cause diaper rash, tooth decay, diarrhea or excessive weight gain as the required fiber is filtered most times

Remember, whole fruits are always better than filtered juices. Let them learn by seeing the real fruit, touching it, peeling its skin, feeling the texture and natural flavor.
