10 Summer Care Tips for New Born and Infants
1. Massage

Massaging newborns is great but not necessary during summers. As these massage oils can block the sweat gland and this may lead to rashes on the baby’s body. Try to use mild massage oils like coconut oil or olive oil and ensure to give your baby a good wash during the bath.
2. Bathing

It’s very common to bathe a baby in very hot water. People assume the baby has got body aches by sleeping the whole day and bathing in hot water will help ease that pain. This is a myth as babies have their own way of working out to relax their bodies. By yawning, stretching their body post-sleep, and moving their legs fast they relax. Give a baby bath using warm water. If the baby enjoys bath time you can bathe the baby twice a day.
3. Right Clothes

Newborns need not be covered with any woolen clothes in summer. Use loose cotton clothes only, even while you attend any function baby’s comfort must remain the priority. Do not put any cap on the baby’s head as that’s the place one sweats the more during summer. Otherwise, you are just welcoming heat rashes. Keep wiping sweat-prone areas every now and then.
4. Dehydration

Keep breastfeeding your baby regularly. Check the cues and ensure the baby is fed on time or the baby may get dehydrated. Check the baby’s pee count. Every 1-3 hours once they need to pee. The irritation due to sweat babies may sometimes not feed well and this will help you understand it better.
5. Heat Rashes

In infants, the rash usually develops on the neck, armpits, elbow creases, and groin. Rub ice cubes or add baking soda in their water during bath these should help relieve the baby from heat rashes. You can also apply sandalwood paste or neem paste.
6. Safeguard from Mosquitos

With the rise in temperature, the mosquitos increase too. Mosquitos get more attracted to sweat and odor hence it’s important to safeguard babies much. When we can’t sleep and keep itching the mosquito-bitten area how would a newborn baby tackle this. It’s best to use baby mosquito nets, cover baby well, and stick mosquito repellent stickers on their clothes. I shall give a link in the description box for all necessary mentions.
7. Room Temperature

It’s a major worry for parents whether to use a fan or not, whether to use ac or not for newborns. Natural air and wind are always suggested, but it’s not possible for everyone to be lucky to have that air or wind blowing from trees around the house in the concrete jungle we stay in. Using a fan is neither dangerous nor a matter of concern until you know to use it right and not make a regular habit. Early morning as the weather remains cool, switch it off and use it when it’s too hot and learn to regulate. Keep a bucket full of water in the baby’s room to ensure the room is cooler when you use a fan. Before moving out ensure to switch off the ac or fan a while to help the baby adjust to the heat while you step out.
8. Traveling with New Born

Though it’s suggested not to take babies out in the scorching sun when it’s unavoidable it’s important to take care of few things. Apply baby-friendly SPF creams, Cover baby fully with cotton clothes, carry an umbrella, use mosquito repellent sticker on baby, keep breastfeeding more often.
9. Diaper Care

Using cloth diapers in summer is great. Avoid using diapers as much as possible. Whenever you are forced to use ensure you keep checking the baby’s skin. If you find any diaper rash, apply diaper rash creams, and give diaper-free time for the baby. Avoid using tissues and wipe them off with a wet cotton cloth. Keep checking the diaper in case they poo as it must never be left too long.
10. Skin Care

Almost all the skincare points are covered under massage and clothing. Few more things to mention. Do not apply soap regularly to the baby’s skin while bathing as it may dry the skin too much, alternate days are good. I would also like to suggest not to use thick oil-based lotions or cream for babies during summer.
