How to Protect Babies from Mosquito Bites & Home Remedies

These sentences make it further scarier for a parent who knows how much trouble these mosquitos are. Dangers of Using Repellents

We shall start the article by understanding the dangers of affordable and most commonly used mosquito repellents. Have you ever checked the instructions or danger signs behind a repellent before buying? Yes, they are printed in very small words and hence easy to get through. Chemicals like Transfluthrin, DEET, BHT, Deodarised Kerosene, and many other proven dangerous when inhaled are included with precautions not to inhale with closed doors or windows. It is much recommended to avoid at home with babies.

Natural Ways to Prevent Mosquitos

• Physical Barriers

Nets for your bed or baby nets are an easy option. You can even mesh the windows and doors of the house. Bats are trendy and I feel the safe & best way when they are less in numbers. Electronic mosquito repellents are also useful but there is a debate on how good they are.

• Clean Environment

Mop the house daily with natural disinfectants. Clear away places open for stagnant water. Throw the garbage out regularly. Fish Tanks, Pools, Water Based Decorations, lawns, or Plants need much care. Bathrooms & Toilets need to be kept more neat and hygienic than ever during this breeding season. Call for pest services if required.

• Store Food Items well

Mosquitos are easily attracted to smell and hence keep the fruits, vegetables, or cooked food covered.

• Mosquito Repellent Plants

Tulsi or Holy Basil, Rosemary, Mint, Thyme are a few plants that can be easily grown at home inside pots to protect ourselves naturally. It is also known that crushing and rubbing the leaves of these plants can prevent us from bites for a few hours.

• Other Natural Ways

Few known methods like herb smoke, camphor in a cup of water, citronella candles, herb oils, lime & cloves are also found effective and safe.

• Exclude Scented Products – Especially around babies avoid perfumes of any sort. Also avoid using products with a high smell like lotion, powder, etc.

• Keep Sweat Away – It is very important to bathe your baby once or twice a day during summer. If you cannot bathe twice then it’s best to wipe off your baby’s sweat as mosquitos are attracted to sweat odor and its warmth.

• Clothing – Light Colored, Loose Fitted, and Fully covered cotton clothes are best for this season.

Tips to Cure Mosquito Bite

It can be highly irritating to babies and some may be allergic to mosquito bites.

1. Ice – Rub an ice cube on the affected skin gently so soothe the skin.

2. Saliva – Apply baby’s saliva as it helps to reduce the itching. Saliva has been proven to speed up tissue repair and has antibacterial properties. It also provides a moisturizing effect on the itchy spot.

3. Baking Soda – Take 1 tsp of Baking Soda in 1 cup of water, mix and apply on baby’s skin and wipe off post 10 minutes.

4. Other Ingredients – A layer of Lemon or Aloe Vera can be helpful. Garlic or leaves of plants like tulsi, citronella, rosemary, thyme can be crushed and applied.
