What are Growing Pains?
Growing pains in children are a common occurrence and typically manifest as aching or throbbing sensations in the legs – shins, calves, thighs, or behind knees, especially in the evening or at night. Children between the age of 3 to 12 years may experience this. Some children experience it for a couple of minutes and some may feel the pain for hours but most of the time by morning your child is well, with no pain or stiffness.
Scientifically Growing Pain is not the right term to describe this condition as it does not occur due to growth or growth spurt. This name was given in the early 1930s and 40s when it was assumed that this was due to faster growth of bones which is not true.
Causes for Growing Pains in Kids
- Excess physical activity on some days, where overuse of muscles is involved.
- Some kids may have a lower pain threshold.
- Kids with flat feet.
- Vitamin D deficiency.

Tips for managing growing pain in kids
- Massage the affected area with warm oil.
- Stretching can help
- Warm compression can be given using warm cloth or heating pad or a warm bath.
- Regular physical activity can help them strengthen their muscles and manage pain
- Children with Flat Feet are advised to wear shoes regularly and use shoe inserts(orthotics) if needed.
- Last resort sometimes can be an over the counter pain reliever, but advised to be avoided.
When to Visit a Doctor?
As explained earlier, Growing pains vanish by morning and if it continues or if you see the below symptoms please visit a doctor
- Fever
- Severe pain
- Lump in muscle
- Redness
- Limping
- Swelling over 24 hours
It’s essential to understand that growing pains are generally not a cause for concern. To ensure the overall well-being of our children, it is important to encourage physical activity, outdoor play, and ample sunlight exposure. In recent times, there has been a shift in parenting trends, placing more emphasis on cognitive development and favoring indoor activities. However, it is crucial to strike a balance by prioritizing physical activities and seeking schools that promote holistic growth and equally value physical development. By actively seeking such educational institutions, we can provide our children with opportunities for wholesome growth and well-rounded development.
