India is known as the global diabetes epicenter of the global diabetes epidemic. We have the highest adult population with Type 2 diabetes and hence the medical industry is focused on them. On the other hand we are seeing an increase in Type 1 diabetes in the child population and this is something which needs utmost attention now.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus commonly known as diabetes is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar. The hormone insulin released by the pancreas helps move sugar from the blood into your cells, to be stored or used for energy. When contracted with diabetes, one’s body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t effectively use the insulin it makes. Untreated, diabetes can damage nerves, eyes, kidneys, and other organs.

Reason for Diabetes in Indian Children

1. Genetic

2. Sedentary lifestyle/ No physical activity

3. Obesity in children

4. Excessive consumption of Junk food

Early Signs of Diabetes in Children

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes have similar signs or symptoms

1. Urinating frequently

2. Feeling very thirsty

3. Feeling very hungry

4. Feeling fatigued

5. Having blurry vision

6. Having cuts or sores not healed properly

7. Unintentional weight loss

8. Numbness or tingling sensation in hands or feet

What is type 1 or type 2 Diabetes?

  Type 1 Diabetes Type 2 Diabetes
1 Occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin Occurs when the body doesn’t respond well to insulin
2 Tends to develop at a young age Tends to develop at an older age
3 Cannot be prevented Can be prevented by lifestyle changes
4 Requires insulin therapy If diagnosed early can be managed with lifestyle modifications alone

 

How can I prevent my child from getting diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented as it is an autoimmune disease.

Type 2 diabetes can be prevented in children by following a healthy lifestyle which includes,

1. A well-balanced diet including whole grains, millets, lentils, fruits, vegetables, spices & pulses.

2. Regular physical activity regime to be followed

3. Regular body checkups will be helpful

4. Avoid junk foods and sugary drinks, offered as a treat or bribe

5. Some other tips like avoiding mobile, sticking to healthy eating as a family, discipline sleep, and wake-up time can really prove helpful.

In case you observe any of the symptoms mentioned above kindly visit your child’s pediatrician. If advised get the tests done and immediately get started on medication advised.
