Teething in Babies – Part 1 | When? Signs? Structure?
Baby’s First Tooth: Babies’ teeth generally will start showing up post 6 months but babies can start teething at 3 months and some babies also have teeth popping out at birth and both are absolutely normal. As the general process swears by this some baby’s teeth show up only post 10 months or a year which should be ok too but it is recommended to visit a pediatric dentist post 1 year to be sure of no issues.

How many teeth do babies get?
By the age of 36 months or 3 years babies will get 20 teeth which are also called Primary Teeth, Baby Teeth, or Milk Teeth which unfortunately fall off by the time they are 6 years old, and their Permanent Teeth grow to post that from 6 to 14 years of age.
Process of Teeth Eruption
The gums look red and swollen and in 2-5 days the tooth starts popping out. The pain will still remain till the tooth comes out completely which can take 5-6 days further. This can be very painful for a baby.
Signs or Symptoms of Teething
1. Drooling – keep wiping off or it can bring in infection.
2. Red & Swollen gums
3. Irritated & Uncomfortable
4. Tugging ears
5. Crying due to pain
6. Ready to Chew everything
7. Hunger Strike
9. Less sleep
Why are Baby Teeth important?
You may be surprised to know that these baby teeth do not help in chewing food in the initial days as they are just used to biting foods. The gums do the mashing and hence when we follow baby-led weaning as early as 6 months babies are ready to chew their food. By 2 years their molars come in and then they chew by their teeth.
They are to fall out but still, it is important to take care of these teeth as they help in learning to talk and pronounce words correctly. When these teeth grow and are placed correctly the permanent teeth will have the same place. It is also important to keep their teeth healthy without any infections or decay otherwise the permanent teeth below this can be damaged. Also not to forget healthy teeth are not just by looks it also helps to keep the baby’s gut healthy
Teeth Placement or Eruption in Order
Your baby from the age of 6 months till 3 years will get 20 milk teeth in total. There will be 5 sets of teeth patterns and each in a set of 4.
1. Central Incisors
2. Lateral Incisors
3. First Molars
4. Canine
5. Second Molars
The myth around Baby Teething
1. Loose motion or diarrhea is not caused due to teething but babies biting and putting everything into their mouth during this time.
2. Early or delayed teething is quite normal and not to be worried about. Post a year visiting a doctor helps in case, not even a single tooth erupts.
3. Decayed milk teeth will not cause a problem as anyways they are meant to fall off.
