What is Vaginal Yeast Infection?
Vagina houses bacteria and yeast which helps keep it in a healthy state. But, when the yeast starts to grow or multiply in great numbers losing the natural balance, a disturbance is created resulting in irritation, swelling or itching in the vaginal area. With proper treatment it can be cured easily and in short period.
Symptoms of Vaginal Yeast Infection
1. Redness, swelling, itching in and around the vaginal area
2. Burning sensation during intercourse or while urinating
3. Vaginal pain or vaginal rash
4. Thick white odor free vaginal discharge – cottage cheese like
5. Watery vaginal discharge
Causes of Vaginal Yeast Infection
1. Pregnancy
2. Diabetes
3. Weakened immune system
4. Excess use of Antibiotics
5. Unprotected Sex
6. Products used for Vagina – Intimate washes, scented pads or sprays etc
Diagnosis & Treatment of Vaginal Yeast Infections
Visiting doctor and not taking over the counter medicines for vaginal infections is always recommended. Inform the doctor if it is the first time or it is recurrent. Doctor might suggest ointments, suppositories or pills for simple yeast infections. This is most generally a simple infection that gets cured with simple medication and within a week.
For recurrent or complicated yeast infections doctor may recommend testing the samples of vaginal cells in the laboratory help you with proper medication to get rid of it.
How to Prevent Vaginal Yeast Infections
1. Wear breathable cotton undergarment
2. Wear loose clothing – avoid tight jeans, leggings, etc
3. Practice good personal hygiene – wash your vagina after urinating each time
4. Do not use unnecessary hygiene products
5. Change or clean menstrual products regularly
6. Avoid unnecessary usage of antibiotics/over the counter medicine
7. Keep your private area dry, avoid taking extra hot baths and staying in wet/moist undergarments
8. Eat well, exercise well and strengthen your immune system
Can I pass this on to my partner? Sexually active only?
Vaginal Yeast infection is not categorized under STDs but it is important to use protection and keep your partner informed about the same. If not men can also get this infection in their penis called as Penile Yeast infection with symptoms like redness on the penis along with a burning sensation. Also, without protection you shall be passing it on to each other and hence most times medication is recommended for both partners and recommend to avoid having sex until its cured.
