What is Gestational Diabetes?

Women experience hormonal and metabolic changes during pregnancy in order to meet the nutrient and oxygen requirements of the fetus. During this time pancreas in our body needs to produce 3 times extra insulin in order to convert glucose to the energy required for the fetus and ourselves, and generally, it happens in most of all woman’s bodies. Some women who fail to produce that extra insulin won’t be able to convert the glucose to energy and this causes extra sugar to build up in the blood which is referred to as Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

Risks due to Gestational Diabetes

This can be treated and kept under control but you may know that this can lead to pre-eclampsia (bleeding, liver issues, kidney failure), stillbirths, fetal macrosomia (overweight baby), need for the C section. The post-delivery baby may suffer jaundice, hypoglycemia(low blood sugar levels), respiratory distress, and a higher risk of mom and baby both suffering from Type 2 Diabetes.

1. Over 25 or Overweight.

2. Family history with type 2 Diabetes.

3. Women suffering PCOS.

4. Gestational Diabetes during the last pregnancy.

5. Gaining too much weight during pregnancy.

6. Unhealthy food & sleeping habits.

Preventing Gestational Diabetes

These are very common suggestions for any pregnant mom, but reiterating for the benefit of you all.

• Plan a diet with 25% Protein + 25% Carbs + 50% Fruits & Vegetables. Avoid junk foods completely and mind your sugar intake.

• Get your physical activity done. Join prenatal yoga classes or just continue to practice your regular fitness regime keeping the limitations of pregnancy.

• Get your Glucose Screening done on time. In the 5th or 6th month, a pregnant mom is generally asked to take this blood sugar test. The general procedure currently followed is – Pregnant mom is asked to take 75 gm of Glucose with water and a Sugar test is done post two hours. It is advised not to have anything in between.

If you are tested with Gestational Diabetes make sure to follow all the above-mentioned and medication as advised by your Gynecologist. Remember this is not life-threatening to you or your child when controlled. Post-delivery, you and the baby both shall be tested and taken care of by the medical team. Do necessary lifestyle changes and you shall be good.
