Each method for men and women that is applicable in India is discussed here with a brief description of each of them and the costs involved.

Popular Birth Control Methods in India for Men
1. Condoms
Safest, cheapest, and easiest birth control methods. As it is made of latex, in a very rare case scenario, if any of the partners have latex allergy it may not be the right choice.
2. Vasectomy
This is a permanent procedure and the only 100% effective contraceptive method. A simple surgery conducted on a man to block the tube responsible for carrying sperm. This is reversible and a man can go to work the same day of surgery and hence not worry to men as well.
Popular Birth Control Methods for Women:
1. Contraceptive Pills
This is another easier and cheaper method chosen by women in India. You can take the advice from a gynecologist before choosing one as there are multiple varieties of pills available these days. Breastfeeding mothers can also use contraceptive pills but as advised by a doctor. Side effects can be observed. It starts from Rs.50/– and can vary depending on the brand.
2. Emergency Contraceptive Pills
These are called morning-after pills and prevent the egg from getting fertilized after unprotected sex. Never to be considered as a regular birth control option due to its side effects. Side effects can be observed. It starts from Rs. 85/-
3. Female Condoms
Just like men’s condoms, these protect against unwanted pregnancy. It is an inverted pouch made from the same latex and inserted into a women’s vagina. No side effects but they are generally difficult to use. It starts around Rs. 180/- for a pack of 6.
4. IUD or Copper T
This is an intra-uterine device shaped in T inserted through the cervix into the uterus which prevents sperm from reaching ova. You or your partner will not feel the IUD, he just may feel the string. Works well for about 3 to 12 years and can be removed when needed. There are 2 types of IUDs, out of which copper T has no hormonal effect. It starts from Rs. 300/– and are provided free of cost at few government hospitals.
5. Birth Control Injection
Once every three months, this injection can be administered. Many women like it better than pills as they may not have to remember to take a tablet daily, and many times women stop getting their menstrual period too. It is highly recommended not to continue to use it for more than 2 years, as a permanent method, to avoid side effects. Breastfeeding women can take this post 2 months of delivery. It starts from Rs. 1400/-
6. Hormone Patch
These are patches like plaster which you can stick on your stomach, arm, butt or back to absorb estrogen and progestin. Needs to be changed every week. Side effects can be observed. It starts from Rs. 300/-
7. Tubal ligation or Tubectomy
The fallopian tube connecting the ovaries and uterus is sealed or tied. Permanent and is almost 99% effective. Very difficult to reverse and would need surgery. Women who do not wish to have any children further can go for this. As there are no hormonal changes there are no side effects like weight gain, mood swings, etc due to this. You can have it done along with your C Section delivery or just a few days post normal delivery before your uterus shrinks. It starts from Rs. 20,000/-
There are many other forms of Birth Control methods but not high in use in India and hence avoided to keep the article short. Most of the hormonal birth control methods have certain side effects like irregular periods, mood swings, heavy breasts, nausea, increased appetite, etc. But remember not everybody faces these issues and hence it cannot be specifically confirmed what suits whom the best. Especially, if you are looking for temporary contraceptive methods you need to try it to be sure of it.
