Wheat Mathri for Toddlers and Kids
Wheat Mathri is a popular North Indian snack. It is kind of a flaky biscuit. A very popular tea time snack, which is generally prepared for most of all the festive occasions, marriages, and poojas. Many variations exist to this Mathri. I have prepared to make this Mathri with whole wheat flour which makes this snack healthier. For kids, this can be a healthy finger food option.
Wheat Mathri is made with ingredients like cumin, carrom seeds which add to the subtle taste here in this recipe. If your worry now is this being fried and is it’s good for babies and kids? Listen, this is made at home with your choice of healthy oil and how can it be bad? Also, any food consumed occasionally and in limited quantity does not cause any harm to babies. This can be given to babies above 8 months without salt. Make it slightly thicker for them to avoid choking and keep a watch for sure. Older than a year babies can have it with ease.

Recipe Type: Snacks
Cuisine:Indian
Ingredients
- Wheat Flour – 1 cup
- Rava/Sooji – ½ cup
- Kasturimethi – 2tbsp crushed
- Pepper – 2tsp crushed
- Carrom Seeds – ½ tsp
- Cumin – 1 tsp
- Chilli Powder – 2tsp ( Optional)
- Salt – 1tsp or as needed
- Ghee – 2 tbsp
- Warm Water – As needed
- Oil – To deep fry
Method
- Take a bowl, add whole wheat flour, semolina/Rava, crushed Kasuri methi leaves, followed by cumin, carom/ajwain seeds, crushed pepper, chili powder(optional), salt, and some ghee. Now bring in all these ingredients together by just mixing by hand. You will find that the flour crumbles up and you will be able to hold it in your fingers.
- To make the mathri crispier add some more ghee, mix this well so that all ingredients bind well.
- Now add lukewarm water to the bowl, make the dough tighter than the chapati. The right consistency would be that of a puri dough.
- Divide the dough into 3 balls. Roll out one on a chapati board, sprinkling some dry flour if needed. Roll the dough evenly. With the help of a fork make marks/holes to help to avoid the mathri fluffing up, which may spoil the texture.
- Now, give Mathri a round shape using a lid or a cookie cutter. Separate it from the dough and keep it ready for frying.
- Ensure the oil is heated well, start frying the Mathri on a medium flame to ensure even cooking inside and outside.
- Filter the excess oil and transfer this to a bowl. Wheat Mathri is all ready to be served.
