Cleaning Baby Ears

1. Washcloth: Earwax is a natural protection for our eardrum and it doesn’t need to be cleaned when it is just inside and not bothering. Regularly post-bath just use a washcloth and wipe off the dirt around and behind the baby’s ear using your finger.

2. Prescribed Eardrop: Only if you see excess earwax consult your baby’s pediatrician and if he advises use eardrop as advised. It helps smoothen the wax and flush it out. Many babies and kids face this problem due to dehydration. Breastfeeding babies often and giving more water to 1 year plus babies helps subside the issue.

3. Emergency: If you see yellow fluid oozing out more often, baby crying when you touch her ears, the baby is rubbing the ear often please visit a doctor immediately to negate any issues and act as suggested. No home remedies to be ever tried for babies ear.

Cleaning Baby Nose

1. Bathing or Steam – While bathing your baby pinch his nose once or twice gently and you can easily remove the mucus or dirt if any. If your baby is struggling to breathe you can do the same after giving steam to your baby. Post bathing or steaming you can also use a soft cotton cloth to remove the mucus.

2. Bulb Syringe – This can be a simple way to help babies release that mucus stuck in their small noses. Be careful while using it and gentle while the bulb sucks the mucus. Also, remember to sterilize before each use and clean with soap after use.

3. Saline Drops – This solution is easily available at any medical shop and can be used as a safe countertop medicine when used as instructed. Pour a few drops into babies 1 nostril and after a few seconds to another one. Wait till the mucus softens and remove it using a Bulb Syringe.

4. Elevated Body & Head – Allow the baby to sit or hold upright in a baby carrier while the baby is awake as this helps your baby breathe with little ease. Keeping your baby’s head elevated with the help of a cushion or small pillow or just folding a big piece of cloth below their head with sufficient neck support during sleep helps the mucus drain on its own.

Cleaning Baby Eyes

And a newborn’s eyes are still developing. Compared to adults, they blink less often, tearless and it takes time for the blink reflex to develop, making it easier for an unwanted substance to get into the eye and cause irritation.

Eye discharge is common in newborns and is commonly due to a blocked tear duct. A person can often treat an infant with a blocked tear duct at home.

1. Care while bathing – Use mild or tearless shampoo which doesn’t cause irritation. Same with soaps too and you need to be extra careful while using besan or any homemade bath powders

2. Cleaning the discharge – Take a cotton ball or soft & wet cotton cloth wipe it gently from the inside corner to the outside corner.

3. Regular yellow or sticky discharge – This is not a case of worry either and if you fear infection use warm water to clean the discharge. Follow the same method of wiping it gently from inside corner to outside corner.  Place the warm cloth on the baby’s eye for a while to soothe pain if any.

4. Emergency – While you need not worry about regular discharge lookout for symptoms like redness, swelling, or tenderness that can be a sign of infection and needs immediate care.

All these are regular baby care concerns and not a major worry. Try to be a calm parent and do not worry about few simple and regular things. Be aware of symptoms and signs to worry about as they need immediate care especially in delicate newborns.

If you feel your body or baby’s body is hot it can be due to various reasons and do not predict and relate it to fever all the time. Measuring the body temperature using the correct method is very important before diving into a conclusion.
