Rasam is the famous dish of South India. Mouth watering rasam made of pepper ‘the king of spices’ gives an instant relief from runny nose and sore throat. Very easy to make yet tasty, pepper rasam is an age old home remedy for treating cold and cough in babies, toddlers and adults. Commonly known as milagu rasam or banaanti rasam in South India. This Traditional Recipe helps increase breastmilk in lactating or nursing mothers with the inclusion of pepper and fennel seeds.
As many names as it might be called in, improves digestion, helps build immunity, and also is dadi’s best home remedy for treating cough, cold, and fever in the first stage. Be it toddlers, kids, or adults nobody can say ‘NO’ to this yummy rasam. Can be given to 8 months+. Along with our other remedies like Turmeric Milk, Besan Ka Sheera, Ginger Kashaya and Tulsi Kashaya try this flavourful, age-old home remedy for cold and cough.
Our Organic jaggery powder best substitute for refined sugar. But you can use palm sugar, coconut sugar, homemade dates sugar, or homemade dates syrup to sweeten up the recipe.

PEPPER RASAM For Lactating Mothers & Best Cold & Cough Remedy

Ingredients
- Turmeric powder - pinch
- Tamrind - 1/2 lemon ring
- Jaggery - 1 tsp
- Coriander leaves - few
- Water - 2 cups
To grind
- Urad dal - 2 tsp
- Peppercorns - 2 tsp
- Coriander seeds - 2 tsp
- Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
- Fennel seeds / saunf - 1/4 tsp
Seasoning
- Ghee - 1 tsp
- Curry leaves - few
- Hing - pinch
- Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
- Red chilli - 1
Method
- Take a clean and dry pan.
- Add Urad dal, Peppercorns, Coriander seeds, Cumin seeds, fennel seeds / saunf and roast them on medium flame for 5 minutes,
- Transfer it to a plate, once cooled you can grind it.
- Take a pan. Add pulp taken from soaked tamarind, and add jaggery powder or piece of jaggery. Add turmeric powder and mix and cook till jaggery melts.
- Add 2 cups of water, the dry masala, salt and boil it for 5 more minutes.
- In another pan prepare seasoning or tadka and add it to rasam mixture.
- Add coriander leaves and serve it hot.
Note -
- Do not cook after adding tadka

Method of making Pepper Rasam for Babies and Family :
1. Take a clean and dry pan.
2. Add Urad dal, Peppercorns, Coriander seeds, Cumin seeds, fennel seeds / saunf and roast them on a medium flame for 5 minutes.
3. Transfer it to a plate, once cooled you can grind it to a slightly coarse powder.
4. Take soaked tamarind and add the pulp taken from it to a pan. Add jaggery powder.
5. Add turmeric powder and mix and cook till jaggery melts.
6. Add 2 cups of water, the dry masala, salt and boil it for 5 more minutes.
7. In another pan prepare seasoning or tadka and add it to the rasam mixture.
8. Add coriander leaves and serve it hot.
