Spit Up in Babies – How to deal?

Spit up like thick milk or curd or water is ok. Spit-up yellowish can be acid reflux, 50% of babies have it till 3 months and by 10 months it reduces in 90% of babies.

A few statistics
1. Spitting up usually occurs right after the baby eats, but it may also occur 1-2 hours after a feeding.
2. Half of all 0-3-month-old babies spit up at least once per day.
3. Spitting up usually peaks at 2-4 months.
4. Many babies outgrow spitting up by 7-8 months.
5. Most babies have stopped spitting up by 12 months.
Causes of Spit-Up

1. Most young babies spit up sometimes, since their digestive systems are immature, making it easier for the stomach contents to flow back up into the esophagus.
2. Babies often spit up when they get too much milk too fast.
3. Baby feeds very quickly or aggressively, or when mom’s breasts are overfull.
4. If the baby is very distractible (pulling off the breast to look around) or fussy at the breast, he may swallow air and spit up more often.
5. Some babies spit up more when they are teething, starting to crawl, or starting solid foods.
To do

1. Do not overfeed – formula or breastfeeding.
2. Hold baby upright while feeding and 15-20 minutes after burping.
3. Keep baby calm and do not allow distractions as he may swallow air.
4. Change the formula milk.
5. Burp after each feed.
6. Spit up while sleeping, elevate his head – not a pillow.
When to visit the doctor?
1. If your baby is vomiting – which is more in quantity and forceful.
2. Not gaining much weight with regular spit-up.
