Stretch Marks during Pregnancy & Post Delivery | Tips to manage

Stretch marks are seen when your body grows way faster than your skin can cope up with. This causes the elastic fibers just under the surface of the skin to break, resulting in stretch marks. On average, a woman gains 13 kg during pregnancy. When our body grows this fast it leaves visible stretch marks. These stretch marks are seen majorly around the belly and breast. It can also show up on your thighs, upper arms, and buttocks. They will be reddish initially and later fade to white. And hence for women with lighter skin tone, it will not be much visible but for women with darker skin tone, it will be.

Can I prevent or get rid of Stretch Marks?
It is not possible to get rid of stretch marks completely as they only get lighter with time. Massaging creams, lotions, and oils cannot make the marks disappear but only turn your skin smooth and supple. Over the months and maybe years, the marks gradually turn into fine lines which are almost closer to your skin tone. So do not fall into the trap of expensive products and lose your money.
Tips to Focus on Skin Health & Fading

1. Stay Hydrated – Drinking lots of water helps to keep our skin hydrated and soft. Soft skin doesn’t develop stretch marks in comparison to dry skin.
2. Avoid Caffeinated Beverages – Coffee, Tea, Energy Drinks, and few Soft Drinks contain Caffeine and increase the risk of developing stretch marks. If you are a person who cannot stay without these then I would recommend you to limit the usage to one or a maximum of two times a day and include a lot of other fluids like water, herbal tea, etc.
3. Eat Healthy – Lack of nutrition is another major cause of stretch marks. Include Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Zinc, and Protein in your diet. A full-fledged meal is what you need now to keep up your health and your baby’s too.
4. Moisturize – Keep your skin moisturized all the time. You can use anybody lotion that suits your skin. I’ve shared a video upon making DIY Body Butter which is very helpful for Pregnant women and helps fade stretch marks when you use it post-delivery. Apply to those areas which are at risk of stretch marks every 2 hours during pregnancy.
5. Don’t try multiple Remedies – Let us not allow someone else to encash upon our emotions and weakness during this stage. Trust me there is no magical cream or home remedy that can vanish the marks. So be cautious while purchasing products and use only one or two home remedies that suit your skin type. Following the skin routine which you did to date will help than something new.
6. Massage – Oil massage once or two times a week can help nourish your skin. Massaging the affected areas with oils make your skin smooth and hence it can reduce the chances of stretch marks. Post-delivery can help fade the mark. Use coconut oil, olive oil anything that suits your skin to reduce the damage.
7. Exercise to Improve Skin Tone – Exercising like light walking and yoga helps repair the stretch marks post-pregnancy. Exercising helps strengthen the muscles of the hips, thighs, and belly. Join some prenatal yoga classes or post-delivery take advice from your doctor and join yoga, gym, or aerobics – anything that suits you or you have been doing all your life. Don’t do something new as your body will take a lot of time to adapt. Also with a reduction in weight, there are more chances of stretch marks fading or lightning hence stay calm.
8. Medical Treatments or Surgeries – The only possible way to get rid of stretch marks completely is through any treatment like Laser Therapy. These are too expensive but if you are hell-bent on getting rid of these stretch marks you can opt for a Therapy or Surgery basis that your doctor recommends. Remember to inform you that you are a new mother and take breastfeeding-friendly medications only.
