Urad Dal Cereal | Split Black Lentil Porridge Mix for Babies | Weight Gaining Food

Urad Dal is rich in protein, carbohydrates, and fats making it the best weight-gaining food for babies. It also contains a high amount of iron, calcium, and magnesium. This heart-healthy lentil also helps ease digestion process, great for skin and boosts energy. This urad dal is a staple food in many households with it being much used in making idli, dosa, vada, and khichdi.
Urad dal is also called a brain-boosting food as its high in essential fatty acids. Here I’m making a simple traditional weaning food for babies using this Urad dal or Split Black Lentil Porridge Mix, Urad Dal Cereal for babies. This Urad Dal Porridge Mix or Kanji is well combined using rice and oats to add in more nutrition and make it a filling meal for babies. This can be given to babies after 8 months.

Urad Dal Cereal | Split Black Lentil Porridge Mix for Babies
Urad Dal Cereal and Porridge

Ingredients
- Urad Dal/Split Black Gram - 1/2 cup
- Rice - 1/2 cup
- Oats - 2 tbsp
- Cinnamon - 1/2 inch
- Almonds - 5
Method
- Take a thick bottom pan and add Urad Dal and dry roast it until it changes its color to light brown.
- In the same pan add rice and roast it till it pops. Add almonds and a piece of Cinnamon and roast it for 3-4 minutes.
- Now add oats and just heat it for a minute and take all ingredients in a plate and allow it to cool completely.
- Once it completely cools down make a fine powder using a blender jar. You can store this porridge mix in a Glass Jar and use it for about 4 months. It's good to always make it fresh and in small batches.
- Now to make porridge, take a thick bottom pan and add 2 tbsp of porridge mix. You can cook it with water or milk. Add 1 cup of water and make a lump-free mixture. Now switch on the flame and cook it on a medium flame for about 3-4 minutes. At this time you can add ghee and jaggery syrup if required.
- Urad Dal Cereal or Urad Dal Porridge is ready for babies.

Method of making Urad Dal Cereal for Babies :

Note :
1. It’s always good to consult a pediatrician before introducing any new food to your baby.
2. Make sure you cook the porridge well till glazy, to avoid digestion issues in babies.
3. Add a pinch of asafoetida or ginger powder if you have a gassy baby.
4. Never reuse any cooked porridge after 2 hours of preparation.
