How often does baby poop?

Breastfed baby poops less and hence once a week is absolutely fine. Formula-fed babies may poop at least once a day to have painless stomachs, though this is not a must. Once they go on solids they should poop at least once a day. If they poop more than one time after each feed, it’s diarrhea, then there is a need to worry. Dehydration can be the main reason for pebble-like poop or struggling to poop and this is called constipation this needs to be taken care of as well.

What does the Poop Color say?

1. Dark Green or Black Tar – Newborns’ poop consists of a dark black or green substance called meconium which is a combination of mucus, amniotic fluid, skin cells, and water. It’s good if babies release it out of their system and this wouldn’t last more than few days.

2. Yellow and Seedy – After the baby releases meconium through his stools breastfed babies pass stool with yellow seed-like particles. It can also be curdy, mushy, creamy, or lumpy.  It’s absolutely normal too.

3. Brown & Thick – Once your baby starts on solids her poop will change in color and odor too. This also may vary depending on the color of the food they eat as their digestive system is immature and doesn’t change the food very much during the process.

4. Green & Watery – Green color can also be due to the color of the food they eat. If it is thick green there is no need to worry as it can also be due to the baby’s iron supplement or iron-fortified formula intake. Continuous green and runny motion in a day can be a sign of diarrhea, allergy, food intolerance, or bacterial or viral infection. The only doctor can confirm this so once have a word with your doctor.

5. Red – Again this could be due to solid intake of same color food like beetroot etc. Chances are that sometimes the baby may poop blood hence in such cases lookout for advice from a doctor.

6. Black – Post-release of mucus from baby’s newborn days if you find your baby poop to be black in color it may be due to iron supplements or formula intake. Sometimes it can also be due to bleeding in the digestive tract in your baby’s body.

7. White – White baby poop may be due to liver problems. Either bile juice is not reaching the stool or something is blocking it from getting into the small intestine. It may also be due to a stomach bug or any allergy and only a visit to the doctor can throw light on the real issue.

A Parent’s instinct is the best judge. If you feel your baby is struggling with pain or even with above-informed symptoms is happy and playing you can recognize it with just a little observation. So do not worry much about something as simple as baby poop, but know about it to tell the doctor in case you meet
