Why does a parent wish to use a Walker?

1. To help the baby learn to walk easily

2. To restrict your baby reach things at home

3. To work, relax or rest while the baby is in it

4. Baby likes it

5. Someone told you to do so

Many countries have banned the usage of Walkers for babies and many pediatricians here now do not recommend using this.

Reasons Baby-Walkers are not recommended

1. Strains Baby
Walkers do encourage tip-toe walking which wreaks havoc on the ankles and hips and underdeveloped leg muscles. As the baby cheers and enjoys those sessions we tend to forget how long the baby is in the walker. Staying longer duration in Baby Walker baby has over-exercised his muscle and strained body too. This may lead to being underweight and fewer sleeping babies.

2. Delayed Walking
Walker discourages babies to walk on their own. Many studies have found that the use of walkers delays independent walking by babies as babies fail to understand how to use their body effectively in an unnatural environment. Falling and raising and judging their step is very important for their effective walking skills.

3. Unusual Walking Patterns
Walkers allow babies to move around before they are physically ready for it. This can cause unusual movement patterns and delayed muscle control. It causes a negative effect on spine development as well.

4. Delay in achieving other Milestones
Just like all other milestones babies have to reach the stage of walking on their own. Excessive use of Baby walkers confuses the baby’s physical and mental coordination which can lead to delay in many other milestones.

5. Safety Threat
With most Indian houses having uneven floors it can be dangerous for a baby. Due to this baby walker may tip and the baby is thrown to the ground. Baby can reach all those substances which are not baby-friendly. A TV, Fridge, any household chemicals, kitchen with various dangerous appliances, etc. Broken teeth, broken leg, broken bones, head injuries, burns, cuts are few common cases reported due to excessive use of Baby Walker.

6. The wrong impression to Parents
As babies with the help of a walker can navigate on their own, parents assume that baby is now independent to roam around and is safe in the walker. Slight negligence can cause immense havoc to the baby as babies cannot control their actions yet.

7. Non-Certified Products
All baby products must be certified as baby safe by meeting certain standards and safety measures. Low-quality plastic materials make the product worse ever to be used for babies.
