Indian households follow a custom very religiously for newborn babies. It is called out in a variety of names in different locations. Ghutti, Vasambu or Suttu Khara, etc. In this article, we shall understand if it’s really necessary.
Can I give my baby Traditional Ghutti or Suttu Khara?
Let’s understand what goes into Ghutti or Suttu Khara or Vasambu. It has varied ingredients list including Nutmeg – Jaifal/ Jaadikkayi/ Jaakayi, Sweet Flag / Acorus Calamus(vaj,baje, vasambu), Turmeric, Pepper, Gold, Silver, Copper, etc are mixed with Honey, Ghee or Breastmilk and fed to little ones.

Why is it not advised to give Ghutti or Suttu Khara to babies?
• Babies below 6 months are not recommended to be given solids.
• Quantity of how much to use what is not documented and hence can be harmful.
• We can never trust the quality of the raw ingredients used.
• Few ingredients have sedatives and hallucinogenic properties. The baby may sleep well and it’s only because of this.
• Honey is a cause of infant botulism which leads to death and not advised to be given to babies below a year.
• Babies who are given this also face digestion issues, because it is anyways going to be there until 3-4 months
• Babies can develop serious infections.
• Traditional but unsolicited due to the unavailability of records.
• Just another practice which is explained all the time by giving examples of it being given to others, but not what exactly it can do. Remember the infant mortality rate then? Only fittest would have survived this.
• Make a wise decision today to skip any of such use. Traditions like the dowry system, child marriage, sati system have been banned overages, and then why not a tradition that does no proven good to your baby? With evidence-based knowledge, we are learning better, and let’s do better for our children.
