Savory Puffed Rice for Toddlers & Kids

Savory Puffed Rice used to be our basic snack option and always available at home. Made from rice and crispy in texture puffed rice or murmura always makes for a great snack for toddlers and kids. Adjust the spice according to your kids’ liking and a great family snack would be ready in just ten minutes.
Plain puffed rice can be offered to even babies as a finger food. Instead of carrying packed junk foods one can easily make this at home a day prior for any of your family trip or picnic. Going forward I plan to share lot of snack recipes with the holidays just coming in. Please keep a watch.
This is an ideal snack for breastfeeding mother as its made in ghee and we’ve added lots of nuts to make it nutritious. It also makes for a great snack box option for kids.

Savory Puffed Rice for Toddlers & Kids

Ingredients
- Puffed Rice/Murmura/Puri - 5 litres
- Ghee - 1 cup
- Mustard Seeds - 1 tbsp
- Groundnuts - 100 gm
- Red Chilli/Byadagi - 5
- Garlic - 20 crushed
- Almonds - 50 gm chopped
- Cashewnuts - 50 gm chopped
- Curry Leaves - 1/2 cup
- Chilli Powder - 1/2 tbsp
- Turmeric - 1 tsp
- Pepper Powder - 1 tsp
- Salt - 1/2 tbsp
- Asafoetida/Hing - 1/2 tsp
- Cumin Seeds - 2tsp
- Dry Coconut - 1/2 cup chopped
- Sugar Powder - 2 tbsp
Method
- Take a big vessel and add ghee. Once hot add sesame seeds and allow it to splutter.
- Add groundnut alone and fry it for 3 minutes without fail. Add dry chilli and garlic and fry another 2 minutes. Immediately add chopped almonds and cashew nuts and fry 2 more minutes.
- Now add curry leaves and allow it to splutter. Once done add chilly powder, pepper powder, turmeric, asafoetida, salt and cumin. Mix it well.
- Immediately add chopped dry coconut and fry it for 2 minutes along with spices. Take the vessel down and now add murmura/puffed rice to it followed by sugar powder(optional).
- Mix all the ingredients well and put it on flame and keep mixing it for 5 minutes to ensure we turn the Puffed Rice well crispy. Cool and transfer it to an airtight container.
- Savory Puffed Rice is ready to be served.

Method of making Savory Puffed Rice
1. Take a big vessel and add ghee. Once hot add sesame seeds and allow it to splutter.
2. Add groundnut alone and fry it for 3 minutes without fail. Add dry chilli and garlic and fry another 2 minutes. Immediately add chopped almonds and cashew nuts and fry 2 more minutes.
3. Now add curry leaves and allow it to splutter. Once done add chilly powder, pepper powder, turmeric, asafoetida, salt and cumin. Mix it well.
4. Immediately add chopped dry coconut and fry it for 2 minutes along with spices. Take the vessel down and now add murmura/puffed rice to it followed by sugar powder(optional).
5. Mix all the ingredients well and put it on flame and keep mixing it for 5 minutes to ensure we turn the Puffed Rice well crispy. Cool and transfer it to an airtight container.
6. Savory Puffed Rice is ready to be served.

Note :
1. To make the dish nutritious I’ve added ghee and lots of nuts. You can alternate ghee with oil.
2. Ensure you cool the dish and immediately transfer into an air tight container to maintain the crispness of Puffed Rice.
3. Skip salt, nuts and coconut, reduce the spice and can be served to babies above 8 months.
