- 7 must foods for reducing weight after delivery
1. Food
Breastfeeding Mother or New Mother must have a balanced diet. In initial days where constipation and gas remain a major concern, it is generally advised to have light food to just ease the process. Post a week or 15 days or however soon the mother is comfortable, the new mom should start having a balanced diet like her earlier food habits. Babies are exposed to their mother’s food right from the time when they were in the womb and hence they still continue to like and need those tastes and nutrition. Pathye is to give balanced food to a new mother aiding her to recover faster and not give less food to reduce weight. So continue to eat all the healthy foods you have been eating till now and try not to eat any new food which you are doubtful about. Weight reduction will happen eventually and should never be an agenda in the confinement period. And only a balanced diet is needed for a mother to increase breast milk and give good nutrition to the newborn baby. Also, ensure to drink lots of water which helps in recovery and milk production. Minimum 3-4 liters of water on a daily basis.
Most babies are not affected by what mothers eat. If you feel your baby reacts to your food by being gassy or constipated, start maintaining a diary. Only a few rare items may pose the concern like dry fruits, dairy products, eggs, and some lentils or pulses.
2. Clothing
The process of delivery is considered to be quick healing and needs to be treated as a regular surgery even in the case of C Section operation. Mothers can wear warm clothes as per the weather and their comfort. Gynecologists stress taking regular baths and maintaining hygiene than insisting on wearing warm clothes. If this was true don’t you think it would be mentioned in the discharge advice? Clothing discomfort can cause stress in mothers and hence never appreciated.
3. Rest
Many mothers have this question and worry, especially moms in nuclear families or staying far from the family due to various reasons. I am a working mom and hands full with it being an entrepreneur and I was continuously told to rest or the scare that I will be facing backache issues further all my life. When I consulted my gynecologist all she had to say was backache starts during pregnancy. You will be holding 3 kilos baby initially and later in a few years 8-15 kgs and this has an effect definitely. In the C section mothers are given spinal anesthesia to numb the body before operating and during normal delivery, most of the time women are given epidural. In any of these cases, the mother may develop complications like shivering, itching, low BP, headache, or temporary back pain. These are the reasons mothers are needed to stay back in hospital for a day in normal delivery and up to 4 days in case of C Section delivery.
The best suggestion is to rest for 10-12 hours during your confinement period which is 30-40 days post-delivery. Later anything best suited or as the baby permits with regular 8 hours of sleep.
4. Sex
It’s important to remember that even if you’re not menstruating regularly while you’re breastfeeding, you could still ovulate and become pregnant. So, if another baby is not in your plan right now, be sure to use a reliable method of birth control, like condoms. If you are willing to take pills then please check and buy breastfeeding-friendly pills only.
5. Postpartum Depression
Sanni is a very common case feared during postpartum days. Women are feared to get into depression very easily during postpartum. I shall make a detailed video on the same but you must be aware that it can be caused due to stress, sleep disturbances, isolation amongst many other reasons. This can happen anytime post 3 weeks to delivery and during baby’s first year. So never ignore it if you feel sad, hopeless, guilty, difficult to bond with or care for your baby. Talk to a counselor for the betterment of you and your baby. I urge the family to not isolate the mother and allow her to enjoy her breastfeeding journey in public. The first step is to allow her to happily breastfeed in front of her husband, mother, father, brother, in-laws, and then she will be a confident mother.
6. Body Massage
One major part of postpartum care is Body Massage and herbal bath post. There has been mixed feedback about the same from many mothers, some enjoy this and feel relaxed and some feel stressed and painful. It’s always good to allow the new mother to decide on what suits her the best. A non-enjoyable massage will definitely do no good to her. If you decide to go with this then it is recommended to go ahead with a certified Post Partum Massage Therapist only. Massages are said to be supplement blood flow and help mothers relax. These also help soothe the strained muscles during the process of delivery.
