Soups are healthy, delicious, easily digestible comforting nutritional food for babies, toddlers & kids during the rainy/winter season and when they have a common cold. Soups are even the best to opt when the child is fussy about food or eating vegetables.
When can you introduce Soup to your baby?
Soups can be introduced to babies as early as 6 months especially soups made with lentils. If you have not introduced a certain variety of vegetables like broccoli or mushrooms and want to prepare soup out of it then its better to introduce when baby completes 8 months of age. Other usual vegetables which we consume on a daily basis like carrot, beans- soups made out of those can be given at 6 months.
Benefits of Soups to Babies
- Consumption of vegetables in the form of soup, if your child is a picky eater then offering vegetables in the form of soups is a good idea.
- A warm soup gives a lot of relief for babies from fever, cold, or cough. Soups are always a better choice when your child is sick and is finding it difficult to swallow food.
- Soups made of vegetables, pulses, rice, or legumes are enriched with nothing but minerals, calcium, proteins, and carbohydrates required for healthy growth.
- Thick, creamy buttery soups are a great way to help kids increase weight. Soups made of rice, lentils or noodles can be served as a mid-morning snack or in the evening to increase the intake of calories and nutrients.
- Soups are a simple way to consume – Be it watery and thin or thick and creamy in consistency, soups are a great way to hydrate the body.
Homemade Soups are better than store-bought instant soup mixes as they are processed and contains flavoring agents, additives, thickening agents, and preservatives which cause more harm than good. Even soups mixes that claim that they are made of vegetables have zero nutrition.
Soups can be fed to babies, using a small soup spoon. Serve it warm and garnish it so that toddlers and kids find it attractive, adding ingredients like pepper, turmeric, cumin, garlic, etc., will not only add to the taste but also carries medicinal value.
